Saudi court sentences Egyptian to 6 years in jail over spying for Iran

A Saudi court sentenced an Egyptian national to six years in jail on Monday over spying for Iran, local online news Al Eqtisadiah reported.

The Egyptian, who will be deported after serving his sentence, was found guilty of sending a confidential document on the Saudi army to the Iranian embassy in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.

The court believed that the convict received a letter from the embassy asking for additional information on the Arab state.

In recent years, the rifts between Saudi Arabia and Iran have further widened, mainly because of their clashing political interests in war-torn Syria and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran in January after angry Iranians stormed the Saudi diplomat mission in protest of the Saudi execution of 47 prisoners on terrorism charges, including a Saudi Shiite cleric, Nemer Baqar Al-Nemer.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, such as Bahrain and Yemen, to stir regional disturbances, despite repeated denials from Iran. Endite
