U.S. Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti visited Ankara Monday to discuss the Syrian impasse with the top Turkish commander, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Gen. Scaparrotti, who took over the position of commander of the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) in May, has also been assuming a NATO hat, as he then took over as the NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Europe.

During his brief visit, the U.S. general discussed the Syrian file with Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar in Ankara.

A written statement of the issues discussed is expected to be released following the meeting between the two top military leaders, according to the report.

The U.S. general also held a closed-door meeting with Turkish Parliament Speaker Ismail Kahraman, Hurriyet Daily News was informed by senior sources.

Scaparrotti visited the parliament building which was damaged during the July 15 failed coup attempt, as well as the General Assembly hall, according to the same sources.

Scaparrotti's visit to Ankara comes just days before U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Turkey scheduled for Aug. 24. Enditem
