Nigeria down Honduras to clinch Olympic football bronze

Xinhua, August 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Roma striker Sadiq Umar scored either side of halftime as Nigeria beat Honduras 3-2 to take the Olympic bronze medal here on Saturday.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring at the Mineirao by firing in from close range in the 34th minute after being set up by captain Mikel John Obi.

Turkey-based forward Aminu Umar doubled the African nation's lead after the break by tapping in after goalkeeper Luis Lopez punched away a Mikel shot.

Sadiq Umar added another in the 56th minute before Antony Lozano struck for Honduras with 70 minutes gone. Marcelo Pereira ensured a tense finish to the match when he scored Honduras' second with four minutes remaining.

But Nigeria survived to become the first African nation to win all Olympic men's football medals.

They won the gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Games and the silver medal in Beijing in 2008. Endit
