Sky win team time trial on first stage of Tour of Spain

Xinhua, August 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Team Sky won the opening day's team time trial on stage one of the Vuelta de Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race on Saturday afternoon.

The team led by Tour de France winner, Chris Froome, was 0.4 of a second ahead of the Movistar Team of Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde over the 27.8 kilometer course between Ourense and Castrelo de Mino in the north of Spain.

Peter Kennaugh will wear the leader's red jersey in Sunday's second stage between Ourense and Baiona as he was the first rider of the Sky team to cross the finish line.

The Orica Bike-Exchange team were third across the line six seconds behind Sky, but there was disappointment for Alberto Contador, who is one of the pre-race favorites as his Tinkoff team finished in eighth place, 52 seconds behind Sky and Movistar.

Although Contador should have fresher legs than both Froome and Quintana after being forced out of the early stages of the Tour de France in July, he started the race with a handicap which he will have to try and make up in the mountain stages which lie ahead. Endit
