(Sports Focus) Zhang Jian joins race for Asia seat on FIFA Council, say Chinese football authorities

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) on Friday announced that its senior official Zhang Jian will run for a position in the newly founded FIFA Council.

Zhang, now vice chairman and secretary general of CFA, joined the other three male Asian candidates to run for the two new Asian seats in the world soccer's governing body.

According to the reform plan of FIFA, the FIFA Council, formerly the FIFA Executive Committee, will consist of 37 members. As a result, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is given three additional seats along with the original four. The third new seat is designated to a female member from AFC.

Zhang Jian will run against Ali Kafashian Naeni of Iran, Saoud A.Aziz Al-Mohannadi from Qatar and Zainudin Nordin from Singapore.

Moya Dodd of Australia, Mahfuza Ahkter of Bangladesh and Han Un Gyong from DPR Korea will contest for one female seat on FIFA council.

The election will be held at the AFC Extraordinary Congress on September 27 in Goa, India on Sept. 27. Endit
