Tokyo shares close lower by break on stronger yen

Xinhua, August 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo shares closed lower Friday morning as the yen remained firm due to market speculation that the U.S. Federal Reserve is in no hurry to raise interest rates.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 11.34 points, or 0.07 percent, from Thursday to 16,474.67.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 1.34 points, or 0.10 percent, to 1,289.45.

Decliners were led by land transportation, food and pharmaceutical issues. Enditem
