JSE closes higher Thursday

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) rallied on Thursday, with the all share index turning the tide in the day after closing weaker several weeks.

The JSE share index gained 1.30 percent to 52,989.66 points, the top 40 picked up 1.49 percent, and the resources was 2.26 percent up.

The South Africa rand was at R13.32 to the dollar from a previous close of R13.37. It was at R15.07 to the euro, and at R17.51 against the pound.

Mining stocks led the broad rally, boosted in part by commodity prices as a result of a weaker dollar and individual corporate earnings.

The Standard Bank interim financial results led to the rally in financial stocks, particularly banks. Endit
