German employment increases in Q2

German employment continued its growth in the second quarter of 2016, underlying a solid domestic economy, official data showed on Thursday.

Following a yearly growth of 1.3 percent in the first quarter, the number of people in employment in Germany increased by 1.2 percent to 43.5 million in the second quarter from the same period of previous year, said German federal statistics office Destatis.

In quarter-on-quarter comparison, the number of persons in employment rose by 1.1 percent in the three months from April to June, more than the average growth of the past five years .

In seasonally-adjusted terms, the employment expanded by 0.3 percent.

According to Destatis, the strong performance of labour market was mainly due to growth in the service sector with the largest contribution from public services, education, and health.

An earlier survey by Germany's Institute for Employment Research found that nearly one million jobs were unoccupied in Germany in the second quarter, partly because an influx of refugees boosted demand for teachers.

In July, Germany's jobless rate stood at 6.1 percent, the lowest level since the country's reunification in 1990. Endit
