Tokyo shares open lower on stronger yen

Tokyo shares opened lower Thursday morning with market sentiment dampened by a stronger yen.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 147.18 points, or 0.88 percent, from Wednesday to 16,598.46.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 12.57 points, or 0.96 percent, to 1,298.56.

Decliners were led by securities, information and communication, and air transportation issues. Endit
