Kemboi disqualified from 3,000m steeplechase as Mekhissi takes bronze

Xinhua, August 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya's dual Olympic gold medallist Ezekiel Kemboi was disqualified from the men's 3,000m steeplechase final at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday as France's Mahiedine Mekhissi was promoted to third.

Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya took the gold medal in an Olympic record time of eight minutes 3.28 seconds. The USA's Evan Jager claimed silver in 8:04.28.

Kemboi, the gold medallist at Athens 2004 and London 2012, finished in the bronze medal position but was deemed to have stepped off the track after an appeal from Mekhissi.

Kipruto's victory gave Kenya their fourth gold medal of these Games. Endit
