Around 200,000 refugees in Uganda face aid reduction due to lack of fund

Around 200,000 refugees in Uganda will have their food rations or cash assistance reduced by 50 percent from this week due to lack of fund, UN Deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said here on Wednesday.

Low levels of funding, together with new arrivals fleeing to Uganda from South Sudan since the latest outbreak of violence in the capital Juba last month have left the refugee response "with no choice but to re-prioritize their focus on the refugees in greatest need," Haq told a daily briefing.

The government of Uganda, the UN high Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Program have appealed for urgent donation to the humanitarian response to refugees in Uganda to end the funding shortage, said Haq.

In July, clashes between the South Sudan government and opposition forces took place in Juba, leaving 272 people dead. The security situation has significantly deteriorated since then.

According to the UN, more than 70,000 people have been prompted to cross the border to Uganda after the renewed fighting, which placed much burden on the already under-funded humanitarian response on the ground. Endit
