Police killed two men attacking a patrol station some 20 km northeast of Moscow, and two officers were injured during the counterattack, the Russian Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

"According to preliminary reports, two men, natives of Central Asia, armed with firearms and axes, have attempted an attack on a police post near the town of Balashikha in the Moscow region," the ministry's spokeswoman Irina Volk said in a statement.

One of the attackers was killed immediately, while the other was eliminated when trying to escape by car, it said.

The Moscow regional law enforcement department opened a criminal case against the two assailants. Endi
