Arms and bombs discovered in northern, southern Algeria

Xinhua, August 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Several terror bunkers containing arms and explosives were found in northern and southern Algeria, said Algerian Defense Ministry on Sunday.

Two of the bunkers were found in the southern province of Tamanrasset near the borderline with Mali and Niger, according to a statement of the Defense Ministry.

The bunkers were found by the detachments of the National Popular Army following the collection of accurate tips, said the statement.

A day earlier, five homemade rocket launchers and three bombs were discovered during a dragging operation in the northern province of Boumerdes, 60 km eastern of Algiers, the statement said.

The arms were found in the Sidi Ali Bounab forest, known as one of the last fiefs of terrorist groups.

A few militants, affiliated with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and the Islamic State affiliate group called Caliphate Soldiers, are still hiding in the dense forests in northern part of Algeria.

Recurrent dragging operations are being conducted there by counterterrorism forces, as some 80 armed militants were killed in the past seven months.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, experts believe Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats. Endit
