Albania, Macedonia to start building major power line next year

Xinhua, August 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Construction works on a 400kV electric power transmission line between Albania and Macedonia will kick off in the first half of 2017, Albania's Minister of Energy and Industry Damian Gjiknuri said on Saturday.

The Albanian government has recently signed a loan agreement with Germany worth 30 million euros (33.5 million U.S. dollars) to finance the first phase of the high voltage power line, he said.

Construction works are expected to last nearly three years, and the line is expected to start operating at the beginning of 2020, he added.

The minister said the project will significantly increase the energy transmission capacity in the region.

Albania is implementing legal reforms in the energy sector and is supportive of efforts to boost regional market cooperation, he said. Endi
