Universities in Berlin attract more applicants than last year

Xinhua, August 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

For the winter semester 2016-2017, many universities in Berlin have received increasingly more admission applications than last year, local media reported on Sunday.

The Humboldt University of Berlin has received 51,400 applications for bachelor study, a year-on-year increase by 25 percent. With only 3,835 seats available, demand exceeds supply by several times.

The big increase of application number has made the university change its rule of admission, so that candidates can choose three equally effective majors by applying and determine one of them later, rather than prepare a main major plus a minor one before, according to Steffan Baron, head of Humboldt's Studies Apartment.

The most attractive major in Humboldt is psychology, with 51 candidates competing for one of the 110 seats, followed by business administration and law.

New admission rule has also made some faculties send out more admission letters, considering that students can choose only one major and give up another two after entering school.

The Free University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin also face the increasing enthusiasm of candidates in this enrollment season.

Goran Krstin, spokesperson of the Free University, said its attractive study programs and the international charisma of Berlin as a metropolis and a science hub contributes to the increase in applications. Endit
