German marks woman Barbara Engleder took gold in the 50m rifle 3 positions women event on Thursday.
Two Chinese shooters Zhang Binbin and Du Li got silver and bronze respectively.
Engleder shot a total score of 458.6 points in the final, which was recognized as the Olympic record due to the change of rules by the sport's world governing body ISSF.
Zhang finished the event with 458.4 points, and Du took the bronze with 447.4 points.
Engleder was playing her fourth Olympic Games. Without getting any medal in the previous three Games, the 33-year-old shooter finally brought a gold back home.
"That means so much to me," said Engleder after the competition.
"I'm the queen of everything right now."
Shooters experienced a tough final. After the elimination of the fourth-placed Italian Petra Zublasing, Engleder was in the first place, holding a 0.9-point advantage over second-placed Du. Du shot a surprising 8.6 afterwards, which pulled her out of the gold-medal contention. Zhang made 10.4 points in her final shot, but that still wasn't enough for her to move past Engleder, who finally took the title after shooting 9.0 points.
"I was so nervous so that shot turned out to be 8.6," said Du.
"I've already won two medals in this Games, so I'm satisfied with my performance."
The Olympic silver medal was the best record for Zhang on the international stage.
"I feel good today," said Zhang. "I didn't expect to get any medal before the final, so the result is quite satisfactory to me." Enditem
