Lebanese air raid destroys terrorist post on eastern border

Xinhua, August 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Lebanese army helicopter destroyed a position of al-Qaida linked al-Nusra Front on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal, the National News Agency said Thursday.

The report said an army chopper launched a raid late Wednesday and rocketed the position of al-Nusra with three rockets.

"The position was completely destroyed," it added.

A military source was quoted by al-Joumhouria daily saying "before the raid, the army has monitored a large group of militants on the outskirts preparing for something."

Earlier in August, the army retaliated to shelling from the Islamic State (IS) on the border with Syria and destroyed al-Nusra post on the outskirts of Arsal.

Militants from the IS and al-Nusra are entrenched in rugged areas along the undemarcated Lebanese-Syrian border.

The two groups overran the town of Arsal in August 2014 before being ousted by the army after days of deadly battles.

The retreating militants abducted more than 30 soldiers and policemen of whom four have been executed and nine remain in the captivity of the IS group. Endit
