Immigrants create 1.3 mln new jobs in Germany: study

Xinhua, August 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

People with foreign roots made significant contributions to provide new job opportunities in Germany, a study found on Thursday.

In 2014, 1.3 million jobs were created by entrepreneurs with immigrant backgrounds, 36 percent more than in 2005, the study by German Bertelsmann Foundation found.

The number of independent immigrant entrepreneurs also increased from 567,000 in 2005 by one quarter to 709,000 in 2014. During the same period, the population with immigrant background in Germany increased by just below 9 percent.

The study also found the nature of immigrants' economic activities had changed. In 2014, only 28 percent of self-employed immigrants were in retail or hospitality sectors, 10 percent fewer than in 2005.

In 2014, almost half of self-employed immigrants were not in trade or catering sectors. One in five self-employed with immigrant background was active in the construction or manufacturing industry.

"People with immigrant background not only work as sole traders, but also create jobs and provide many people opportunities to participate in the labor market,"said Aart De Geus, CEO of the Bertelsmann Foundation. Endit
