China confirms fishing boat crash near Diaoyu Islands

A Chinese fishing boat sunk after colliding with a Greek cargo ship in waters near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

"Six Chinese crew members were rescued and both Chinese and Japanese government ships are making their best efforts to search for others still missing," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, quoting an announcement by the China Coast Guard and China Maritime Search and Rescue Center.

The crash occured early Thurday morning in northwestern waters about 70 kilometers off China's Diaoyu Islands.

Hua said that China hopes relevant maritime departments of the two countreis will continue to cooperate in handling the emergency. Endi
