Real Madrid full back Dani Carvajal scored a 119th minute winner to give Real Madrid their first title of the season as they defeated Sevilla 3-2 in the final of the European Supercup on Tuesday.
Sevilla had looked on target to win the title only to be denied by a Sergio Ramos header deep into injury time. After being reduced to 10 men early in extra time they were again to be frustrated by the full back's solo goal with only seconds remaining in extra time.
Madrid went into the game without Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema with returnees Marcos Asensio and Alvaro Morata leading their attack.
Meanwhile Sevilla had a host of changes from the side which won their third consecutive Europa League title in May, not least Jorge Sampaoli, who replaced Unai Emery as coach during the summer.
The opening minutes showed Sampaoli's Sevilla will look to build from the back no matter the pressure of their rivals high up the field, while Real Madrid's youngsters showed they were willing to do just that.
Asensio staked his claim to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 22nd minute with a 25 meter shot which Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico seemed to misread as it flashed by him into the top corner.
Sevilla had most of the ball, but didn't manage a shot on target until the 41st minute. New arrival Franco Vazquez made it count though as he beat Kiko Casilla from the edge of the area to level the score.
The second half saw both sides tired but Sevilla took the lead from the penalty spot when substitute Yehven Konoplyanka converted after Vitolo was brought down by a clumsy challenge from Ramos.
By then Luka Modric and Benzema were on the pitch for Madrid, but Sevilla held on well until the third minute of injury time when Ramos headed home to send the game into injury time.
Sevilla were reduced to 10 men shortly after the restart when Timothee Koloziejczak was sent off for seeing a second yellow card after fouling Lucas Vazquez.
With a man less and effectively still in pre-season Sevilla were forced into a rearguard action as Madrid claimed the initiative. Vazquez saw a chance well blocked by Rico as did Casimiro, before Carvajal's winner two minutes from time decided the match. Endit
