US women rout Senegal with record win

The US women's basketball team opened their bid for a sixth consecutive Olympic champion with a 121-56 victory over Senegal here on Sunday.

The US side broke their own record for most points scored in the Olympics. The previous record was 114 in 1992 and tied at the London Olympics.

Diana Taurasi finished with 15 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Sylvia Fowles also had 15 points, tied by Breanna Stewart with 15 points. Brittney Griner and Elena Delle Donne each made an impact in their Olympic debuts. Griner had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Delle Donne added 11 points, 6 assists and 2 steals of her own.

The United States surged to a 64-21 lead at the main break before putting the game far beyond reach. The US women's team is to play Spain on Monday. Endit
