Australia jumps to top of medal table after women's 4x100m freestyle gold

Australia shot to the top of the Rio Olympic Games medal table by clinching their second gold of the night and setting a new world record in the women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay final on Saturday.

Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and Cate Campbell won in 3 minutes 30.65 seconds, beating the previous mark of 3:30.98, also set by Australia in 2014.

The USA team of Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer and Katie Ledecky took silver with a time of 3:31.81, ahead of Canada's Sandrine Mainville, Chantal Van Landeghem, Taylor Ruck and Penny Oleksiak, who were a second further back.

Australia had qualified fastest for the final with an Olympic record time of 3:32.29 at Rio's Olympic Aquatics stadium.

Earlier, Mack Horton won Australia's first gold medal of the Rio Games in the men's 400m freestyle, beating favorite Sun Yang of China by just 13 hundredths of a second.

Australia's medal tally stood at three. In addition to their two swimming golds, they secured bronze in the men's archery team event earlier in the day. Endit
