Horton: 400m freestyle gold 'hasn't sunk in yet'

Swimmer Mack Horton said Australia's first gold medal at the Rio Olympics was yet to sink in after his surprise victory in the men's 400m freestyle final here on Saturday.

Horton clocked 3 minutes 41.55 seconds to defeat pre-race favorite and defending champion Sun Yang of China by just 13 hundredths of a second at the Olympic Aquatics stadium. Gabriele Detti of Italy was third in 3:43.49.

"In another big final, it's about touching the wall first and that's what I did," Horton told reporters. "I had my eye on everyone else in the field.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet. I have a couple more races this week so I need to relax a little bit and focus on those but it's very exciting."

Horton, who finished second fastest in qualifying, is competing at his first Olympic Games in Rio. The 20-year-old was the bronze medalist in the 800m freestyle at last year's world championships in Kazan. Enditem
