Asian farmers gather in Vietnam to discuss sustainable agricultural policies

Xinhua, August 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

The seventh General Assembly of the Asian Farmers' Association (AFA) for Sustainable Rural Development opened in Vietnam's capital Hanoi on Friday, with participants from 13 countries in Asia, including Vietnam.

According to Shimpei Murakami, AFA President, the association, founded in 2002, is a regional alliance of 17 national federations and organizations of farmers and producers from 13 countries in Asia, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA on Friday.

The event is a forum for farmers' organizations to discuss sustainable agricultural policies and practices, promote agriculture among the young, promote fair and just treatment of small-scale farmers, and promote food sovereignty measures, said the president.

Vietnam has officially become a member of AFA in 2016 after acting as an observer for 14 years.

Vu Van Tam, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, expressed his hope that as an AFA member, Vietnam's farmers will be able to make their voice heard. Endit
