Pakistan says to continue taking action against all terrorist groups despite retract of U.S. aid

Xinhua, August 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Pakistan said on Thursday it is taking action against all the terrorist groups without any distinction hours after the U.S. defence department said it will not pay Pakistan 300 million U.S. dollars in military aid.

A Pentagon spokesman, Adam Stump, has said that Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter had decided against making a certification to Congress stating that Pakistan is taking sufficient action against the Haqqani network, a Taliban affiliate blamed for attacks on U.S. and allied personnel in Afghanistan, Washington Post has reported.

Commenting on the Pentagon's decision not to provide 300 million dollars to Pakistan in military reimbursements, Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakariya Pakistan is taking action against all the terrorist groups without any distinction.

"Pakistan has suffered more than any other country in the war on terror both in terms of human and economic losses. Sixty thousand people including six thousand security personnel have lost their lives in this war," the spokesman said at his weekly news briefing in Islamabad.

He said the operation in North Waziristan tribal region has seen a resounding success due to which last bastions of terrorists in the tribal areas have been cleared.

"Pakistan will continue its fight against terrorism with firm resolve and determination and will ensure that the cleared areas do not slide back to the terrorists," he said while referring to the major offensive codenamed "Zarb-e-Azb" is in final phase.

The spokesman also welcomed the U.S. gov't decision to include a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban in its list of terrorist group.

The United States has added Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat-ur Ahrar to its list of global terrorists, which is blamed for several attacks on civilians, religious minorities and security forces.

The TTP Jamaat-ul-Ahrar was formed after some Taliban leaders parted ways with the main group in 2014.

"Pakistan welcomes the decision. Pakistan has long been pleading to take concrete action against the TTP and other groups which are perpetrating attacks in Pakistan while operating from Afghanistan," Zakariya said while responding to a question about the proscription of Jamaat-e-Ahrar by the United States.
