Mauritius Prime Minister Aneerood Jugnauth has urged participants at a global anti-corruption conference to enhance the fight against the vice, especially in the area of procurement in government departments.
The prime minister was speaking on Tuesday during the second global conference on the fight against corruption in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that he opened in the capital Port Louis.
"The biggest challenge is to ensure that procurement systems are strong, transparent and corruption-free," he said, adding that procurement systems that are strong and meet international standards, can help ensure that money is well spent."
Effective complaints mechanisms are imperatively required to report bribery, collusion or other corrupt practices, he affirmed.
Some of the objectives of the conference is to identify challenges in the procurement process and share the best international procurement practices.
The event was organized by Mauritius ministry of financial services, good governance and institutional reforms in collaboration with the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
The three-day conference is being attended by business leaders and government representatives from about 20 small island nations. Endit
