AU deploys election observers in Zambia

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has approved the deployment of AU Elections Observation Mission (AUEOM) to the general elections of Zambia scheduled to take place on Aug. 11, 2016.

The deployment of the AUEOM will take place in two phases, noted a statement from AU on Tuesday.

The first phase comprises the deployment of long term election experts and takes place from July 14 to Aug. 22 and it is made up of 10 observers.

For the first time, the African Union long term experts include election, legal, political, media, campaign analysts, said the statement.

The objective is to ensure that the AUEOM approaches its work with added professionalism and factual analysis of the legal, political, electoral, media and campaign aspects of the electoral process in Zambia, it added.

The second phase deploys short-term observers on Aug. 1-15, and the short term mission is headed by Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, according to the statement. Endit
