Olympic Truce Wall unveiled in Rio

Xinhua, August 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Olympic Truce Wall was unveiled in the Olympic Village of the Rio Olympics on Monday, four days before the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Games.

"The Olympics Truce is as relevant today as it was in ancient times. In the world of crisis and war, more than ever, the world needs the Olympics value of peace and solidarity," said International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

"This Olympics Truce is where all of us can show our support for the Olympics Truce and the principals it represents. "

For the first time in the Olympic history, IOC announced the formation of the Olympic Refugee Team, which represents millions of refugees from all over the world. A team of 26 refugee children presented two Brazilian songs during Monday's ceremony.

"In this way the team will be a signal of hope for all the refugees in the world.," said Bach.

"The Olympic village shows us that a world of peace and solidarity is possible, so in this spirit, let' s write our messages of hope of the Olympic Truce moral and the messages for a better and peaceful world."

The Olympic Truce is a tradition dating back to ancient Greece. A Truce was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure the host city was not attacked and athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries. Endit
