Police have arrested three men suspected of being part of a group that committed gang rape of a woman and her teenage daughter in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said Monday.
Police officials have filed a case against five people accused in the case.
"We have registered a case against five accused and formed three police teams to investigate the case," a police official said. "Three of the accused have already been arrested and we are conducting searches at nearby places including Haryana and Uttrakhand to nab the remaining accused."
The men were arrested after being identified by the victim family.
On Friday night, a woman and her 14-year-old daughter were gang raped in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, about 83 km east of New Delhi, India's national capital city.
The duo was travelling along with four members of their family in a car, which was stopped by the group and forcibly taken to an isolated place near Dostpur village. Reports said the robbers tied male members with ropes and subjected woman along with her teenage daughter to gang rape.
The incident has caused panic and outrage across India, and put a question mark on safety of women and efficiency of police force in the country.
The local government in Uttar Pradesh has suspended seven policemen including a top officer of the district for dereliction of duty.
The family was also robbed of money, jewellery and their mobile phones, besides being left stranded on the deserted stretch until Saturday morning. Endit
