Iran supports a political solution to the Syrian conflict, Iran's senior Foreign Ministry official said here on Sunday in a meeting with the visiting UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will support any solution which is approved by the Syrian government, nation and political groups," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari said, according to Press TV.

Jaberi Ansari said that Iran's strategy since the onset of the crisis in Syria has been to underscore a political solution as the main strategy to end the crisis in the Arab state.

Observing the realities in Syria will be an important step toward the success of a political solution to the conflict in the Arab state, he was quoted as saying.

In the meeting, both Jaberi Ansari and de Mistura called for the continuation of bilateral consultation in a bid to help settle the Syrian crisis through political approaches.

The UN envoy, who arrived in Iran's capital Tehran on Sunday for talks on Syria, is also scheduled to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss the upcoming peace talks about the Arab country in Geneva, Switzerland.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin on July 22, de Mistura said "We are determined to actually look for a proper date in August for relaunching the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva."

Iran, a major regional ally of the Syrian government in its fight against militant groups, has repeatedly acknowledged the presence of its military advisers in the Arab state. Endit
