Singapore PM "saddened" over former president Nathan's stroke

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Sunday that he was "saddened" to learn about former President S R Nathan's stroke and his "grave condition".

Lee, who is on his way to Washington for his official visit to the United States, wrote in his Facebook post that he is in touch with Nathan's family.

"We have him in our thoughts and prayers," he said, stressing Nathan's contributions to Singapore including in his role as ambassador to the United States.

Singapore's Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong visited Nathan at Singapore General Hospital on Sunday evening.

"According to the doctor who was there, the vital signs are stable," said Goh. The former prime minister last met Nathan three to four months ago at his home in Joo Chiat. Goh said Nathan is a fighter, adding that "he has gone through this many times."

Singapore's Prime Minister's Office said Nathan is "in critical condition" in the Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital in a statement released around noon. After hearing the news, many Singaporeans post their wishes for the former president on Facebook.

Nathan, 92, has suffered a stroke in April last year. He was the sixth and longest-serving president in Singapore, and was in office for two terms from 1999 to 2011. Endit
