Serbians divided over EU integration: research

Slightly more than half of Serbian citizens support continuation of the country's EU integrations despite Brexit, results of a research published on Thursday show.

The research performed in June and July by NGO Institute for European Affairs shows that 53 percent of people support the continuation of EU integrations, but stresses that a growing number of young people resist EU integration.

Tibor Moldvai, researcher from the institute, said while presenting the results that almost two thirds of older people support Serbia's EU path, but 51 percent of young people with age ranges between 18 and 29 think Serbia should no longer go in that direction.

Only 43 percent of young people think Serbia should continue towards full EU membership.

"The main result of the research is that young people are more reserved in relation to EU integrations than older ones," Moldvai said.

Results show that 82 percent of people are against any possibility that Serbia becomes a member of NATO.

According to the research, 41.3 percent of Serbian people think that Russia is Serbia's greatest friend, 12 percent of people see the greatest ally in Greece, while the third place is China with 9.6 percent.

The research included 1,007 citizens of Serbia older than 18, and was conducted between June 28 and July 6. Endit
