Prominent Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara passed away here late Wednesday, media reported on Thursday.

Born in 1928, Rautavaara was one of the best known Finnish composers since Jean Sibelius (1865 to 1957). Rautavaara wrote eight symphonies and 10 operas.

Best known works of Rautavaara are his seventh symphony Angel of Light from 1994 and Cantus Arcitus recollecting birds singing from 1972.

In 1955, Sibelius recommended Rautavaara to be admitted into Juilliard in New York. Rautavaara's study there was essential for his career success.
