Turkish university names "heroic" Turks in coup attempt for Nobel peace prize

A Turkish university on Thursday nominated those "heroic" Turks who resisted the July 15 coup attempt for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

"We decided to nominate the heroic Turkish people, who stood against the coup d'etat risking their own lives, for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize," Mustafa Aydin, president of Istanbul Aydin University, told a press conference.

Hundreds of thousands of Turks flocked to the streets across the country when a minority faction within the military tried to overthrow the government.

The coup was crushed by early morning of July 16, in which 246 people were killed and 2,186 others were injured.

Since the night of the coup, so-called "democracy watch" rallies have been organized every night in city squares across the country.

"The people did not only destroy the treacherous plan to overtake the nation with their peaceful resistance, they also showed Turkey's strong commitment to democracy," Aydin said.

Academicians from the university said they would prepare "solid evidence," including video coverage and detailed documents, for the Nobel nomination. Endit
