Department store sales in S.Korea post double-digit rise in June

Xinhua, July 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Department store sales in South Korea posted a double-digit increase last month on the back of more days off and lower base effect, a government report showed on Thursday.

Revenue in major department stores advanced 11.8 percent in June from the same month of last year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The big increase was attributable to lower base effect as the revenue in June last year reduced due to negative effect from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak. One more day off in June compared with a year earlier also contributed to the sales increase.

Overseas brand-name clothing sales jumped 20.4 percent in department stores last month, with those for womens casuals rising 14.7 percent. Sales of food and womens suit gained more than 10 percent, and miscellaneous goods sales climbed 11.8 percent.

Sales in convenient stores surged 18 percent in June from a year ago as the number of stores increased amid rising demand for purchase in convenient stores caused by a growth in single-person households.

Instant food sales surged 47.7 percent in convenient stores, with those for processed food expanding 20.9 percent.

Major discount outlets saw revenue in June rise 0.9 percent on the back of demand for summer clothing and sports items. Endit
