Thermal-power plant synchronizes 150 megawatts into Zambia national grid

Xinhua, July 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

A coal-powered thermal plant in southern Zambia's Sinazongwe district has rolled the first of its 150 megawatts of electricity into the national grid, the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH) said on Tuesday.

The ZCCM-IH, a government entity that holds shares on behalf of the government in all mining firms, said the Maamba Collieries Coal fired plant was successfully synchronized with the national grid on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement posted on its website.

The synchronization of the second 150 megawatts was expected to follow in the coming weeks.

ZCCM-IH owns 35 percent of Maamba Collieries Limited which has constructed the thermal plant while Singapore's Nava Bharat Ventures Limited owns 65 percent of the coal miner.

Construction works for the 300 megawatts coal plant started in 2011.

The proponents of the thermal power project have signed a long-term power purchase agreement with power utility, Zesco Limited.

The synchronization of the thermal power plant will go a long way in easing Zambia's power deficit which the southern African nation has been facing since June last year. Endit
