Nepalese President paves way for formation of new government

Xinhua, July 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday issued an order to remove the constitutional hurdles for the election of a new Prime Minister of the country.

The order has paved the way for the formation of a new government under the transitional provisions of the new constitution.

The move comes a day after the government recommended the president to invoke Article 305 of the Constitution of Nepal to remove the constitutional difficulties.

Following the recommendation, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had tendered his resignation on Sunday as a reply to the no-confidence motion filed against him in the parliament.

"As per the Article 298, a new government cannot be formed directly through House after resignation of the Prime Minister," Minister for Information and Communication Sherdhan Rai, who is also the government spokesman had told media.

As per the Article 305, in case of any difficulties to implement the constitution, the president can issue necessary orders to remove such difficulty on the recommendation of the government. However, such orders must be submitted to the Legislature Parliament for approval.

It has been reported that President Bhandari will make formal appeal to major political parties soon to form the new government based on consensus.

After serving as the Prime Minister for nine-months, K.P Sharma Oli stepped down on Sunday after his government was reduced to minority as its coalition partners CPN (Maoist-Centre), Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party pulled their support.

It has been learned that Chairman of CPN (Maoist-Centre) will lead the new government as his party and the major opposition Nepali Congress had earlier agreed to form the coalition government on a rotational basis. Enditem
