Pakistani PM vows anti-terror cooperation with Afghanistan after Kabul attack

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday called for anti-terror cooperation with neighbouring Afghanistan days after a terrorist suicide bombing killed over 80 people and injured nearly 300.

The Islamic State or Daesh had claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack in a procession of the Hazara community. Almost all victims were civilians and youth.

"Pakistan remains strongly committed to deepening cooperation with Afghanistan in fighting the scourge of terrorism, which is a common enemy," Nawaz Sharif told Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in a telephone conversation, the PM office said.

"The Prime Minister conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people and the government of Pakistan over the dastardly terrorist attacks in Kabul," a statement from the PM said.

He strongly condemned this brutal act of terrorism and extended deepest sympathies and prayers to all the families who lost their loved ones in this heinous act, and wished early recovery for those who have been injured.

It was the second telephonic contact between the two leaders in less than ten days that could be seen as very important to bridge the trust gap.

The Afghan president called the Pakistani prime minister last week to inform him about the killing in a drone strike of a senior Pakistani Taliban commander Umar Mansoor, who was behind a series of major terrorist attacks including the 2014 assault on the army-run public school.

"The government and people of Pakistan stand shoulder to shoulder with the government of Afghanistan and our Afghan brethren in this hour of need," Nawaz Sharif said.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani thanked the prime minister for expressing solidarity with the government and people of Afghanistan at this critical moment, the statement said.

"President Ghani said both the countries have been facing repeated attacks of terrorists which are harming our people. He appreciated the prime minister's condolences, compassion and concern for the people of Afghanistan as brotherly country."

"We are together in fighting the war on terror," the statement quoted President Ghani as saying. Endit
