Xinhua, July 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Taiwan's population has hit 23.5 million, up 0.07 percent from the end of 2015, largely because the new-born population exceeded those who deceased in the first six months of the year.

According to the island's interior department, females account for about 50.18 percent of the entire population.

Some 68.98 percent of the total population was concentrated in municipalities of Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. New Taipei ranked first in terms of population with about 3.97million registered residents.

The ratio of senior citizens has been increasing annually, with 3.02 million residents aged over 65 in the island. Endi
