Singapore bans newspaper affiliated to ISIS

Xinhua, July 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore government has banned "Al Fatihin", a newsletter published by a media agency affiliated to terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), announced the Ministry for Communications and Information (MCI) in a statement on Friday.

MCI said that ISIS poses a serious threat to the security of Singapore, and that the affiliated newsletter was one way the terror group is spreading extremism in Southeast Asia.

"Al Fatihin is yet another step by ISIS to spread its propaganda abroad, with a clear intention to radicalize and recruit Southeast Asians to join ISIS," said MCI, "Singapore government has zero tolerance for terrorist propaganda and has therefore decided to prohibit Al Fatihin in Singapore."

The newsletter was gazetted as a prohibited publication under the Undesirable Publications Act, which restricts publications that the government considers contrary to public interest. This means individuals are not allowed to possess these publications and they cannot be distributed or sold in Singapore.

MCI added that those convicted of an offence could be liable to a fine, imprisonment or both. Enditem
