Bodies of 3 climbers recovered after Peru avalanche

Xinhua, July 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

The bodies of three climbers, who had been missing since Tuesday morning, were recovered Thursday on the Huascaran mountain in Peru's northwestern region of Ancash, officials said.

The identity of the dead climbers -- two Mexican and one Peruvian -- is yet to be released.

A group of climbers, made up of Peruvians, Mexicans and Spaniards, tried to reach one of the two summits on the Huascaran mountain. The mountain's highest summit is 6,768 meters above sea level.

They were caught off-guard by an avalanche which dragged them toward a deep crack that separates the two summits known as La Garganta.

A Mexican survived the ordeal unhurt. Two Spaniards and two Peruvians were hospitalized while another Peruvian is still missing. Endi
