Turkish parliament approves state of emergency bill

Xinhua, July 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Turkey's parliament passed a bill to introduce a three-month state of emergency on Thursday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Altogether 461 deputies attended the voting at the general assembly, of which 346 voted in favor of the bill, the report said.

The bill was largely supported by the ruling Justice and Development Party and Nationalist Movement Party, while the deputies of Republican People's Party and Peoples' Democratic Party voted against it.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Wednesday a three-month state of emergency after last Friday's failed coup.

At least 246 people, including members of the security forces and civilians, were killed during the coup attempt and more than 1,500 others were wounded. Endit
