Kenya, Japan to enhance collaboration in the medical field

Xinhua, July 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya and Japan plan to enhance collaboration in the medical field in order to boost Kenya's research capacity, officials said on Thursday.

Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr Cleopa Mailu told a forum in Nairobi, that Nairobi and Tokyo are currently in negotiations to strengthen Kenya Medical Research Institute.

"Through the cooperation we hope to enhance our capacity to combat infectious diseases such as Tuberculosis and HIV," Mailu said during the opening ceremony of the Japan Africa Symposium on Science and Technology.

Mailu said Japan and Kenya are currently conducting an entomology (study of insects) research through the Eastern and Southern Africa Center of International Parasite Control.

The study will investigate the geographical distribution of malaria vectors through extensive field surveys and also monitor pyrethroid resistance in areas where pyrethroid-impregnated bed nets are used. Endit
