Palestinian shot after allegedly stabbing Israeli soldiers in the West Bank

Xinhua, July 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian was shot and seriously wounded after stabbing and slightly wounding two Israeli soldiers in the West Bank on Monday, the Israeli army and a hospital spokesperson said.

The Palestinian man approached and stabbed two Israeli soldiers, wounding them slightly, near the Palestinian village of Al Arroub, southwest of Bethlehem in the West Bank, a Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said in a statement.

Soldiers at the scene shot and wounded the perpetrator, the IDF said without disclosing his condition.

A spokesperson for the Shaarei Tzedek hospital in Jerusalem said the man arrived at the hospital in serious condition.

The two slightly wounded Israeli soldiers were being treated in the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, according to Israeli emergency services.

The incident is the latest in a wave of violence which started in October and had since claimed the lives of 34 Israelis and 217 Palestinians.

Whereas Israelis were killed in stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks, the Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces during protests, or after carrying out, or attempting to carry out, attacks against Israelis.

Israeli leaders accuse the Palestinian Authority of inciting violence, whereas the Palestinians say the latest wave of unrest is the result of 49 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories, home to several million Palestinians, and where they wish to establish their own state.
