Croatia to hold early election on Sept. 11

Xinhua, July 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia will hold an early parliamentary election on September 11, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic decided on Saturday.

The decision was made after the parliament was formally dissolved on Friday.

The coalition government, consisting of Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), one of the biggest parties in the country and its junior partner Most, fell in a no-confidence vote last month, as a result of a split within the ruling coalition.

Croatian law stipulates all political parties have to recommend candidates to the state elections committee within 14 days once the election date is chosen.

Among the members of the 151-seat parliament, 140 will be elected in 10 constituencies in Croatia, three will be elected by the diaspora and another eight seats were reserved for national minorities.

Analysts here predict that neither HDZ nor the main opposition the Social Democrat Party (SDP) is likely to win an overall majority in the parliament.

Small parties could play balance roles again like the previous election, which was held on November 8 last year, they said, adding it would be hard to form a stable cabinet under current conditions.

The election will be the ninth parliamentary election since Croatia gained independence in 1991. Endit
