Valdemaras Rupsys becomes new Lithuanian land forces commander

Brigadier general Valdemaras Rupsys on Friday has started his service as a commander of Lithuanian army's land forces.

He replaced major general Almantas Leika. The new service was highlighted by another achievement for Rupsys. Before the transfer of service, Rupsys, previously the colonel, received a rank of brigadier general, from the country's president Dalia Grybauskaite.

The president named the army's expansion, modernization, intensified allied military training and integration of new weaponry systems as the main tasks for the new commander, according to the President's Office.

Rupsys has been serving in Lithuanian defense system since 1990. He served as the commander of motorized infantry brigade Iron wolf, was the head of Human resources department at the country's defense ministry.

The new commander takes over his service amid the country's increased efforts to step up its defense, since tensions in the Eastern Europe erupted with conflict in eastern Ukraine. Endit
