European Parliament President Schulz expresses condolences after Nice attack

Xinhua, July 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Parliament President Martin Schulz expressed his sorrow and condolences on Friday after an attack in Nice, France on Thursday night that has killed at least 84 people.

"I would like to express my deep sorrow following the attack last night in Nice. On behalf of the European Parliament, I would like to extend my condolences to the families and friends of the many victims. I send my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. I commend the courage and solidarity of both the emergency services and ordinary citizens of Nice," Schulz said in a statement.

He said the attack was an "act of appalling cowardice" that chose a symbolic date which is special for French people and their national heritage: Bastille Day, the day commemorating the Storming of Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

"Our determination to fight against terrorism, in France, in Europe and throughout the world is not deterred," he pledged.

The president called on the French people to stand strong and united against these acts of hatred. "France should not surrender its values of freedom, equality, and fraternity," he said.

At least 84 people are dead, many of them children, and around 50 people are in hospital in critical condition, after a 19-ton trunk drove at high speed into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the French Riviera city of Nice. Endit
