Germany pledges solidarity with France after Nice attack

Xinhua, July 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany stands together with France after dozens were killed in an attack in French city of Nice during Bastille Day celebrations, said German leaders on Friday.

"Germany is on the side of France in the fight against terrorism," an official statement issued here quoted German Chancellor Angela Merkel as saying.

"I am very confident that, despite all the difficulties, we will win this fight," she added.

She said on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe summit (ASEM) in Mongolia that she had expressed her compassion to the French side, calling the attack in Nice a "mass murder."

"A day of pride has now become a day of great sadness," Merkel added.

"At this difficult time, My thoughts and sympathy are with the victims, their relatives and all the (French) countrymen," said German President Joachim Gauck in a statement.

Death toll has risen to 84, according to latest reports, after a truck Thursday night drove at high speed into a crowd who gathered on the promenade in Nice to watch a fireworks show marking the French national day. Endit
