Vietnam cancels status of one parliament member

Xinhua, July 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

All members of Vietnam's National Election Council (NEC) on Friday voted to approve on disqualification of a parliament member, said Nguyen Hanh Phuc, head of the National Assembly (NA) General Secretary and Chief of the NEC's Office.

Specifically, Trinh Xuan Thanh, former vice chairman of Vietnam's southern Hau Giang province, was dismissed from the post of the 14th NA deputy, Phuc was quoted by state-run radio Voice of Vietnam on Friday.

As a result, as many as 495 are said to be qualified as the 14th NA deputies, said Phuc.

Earlier, some 496 deputies were elected to Vietnam's new parliament out of 870 candidates based on the results of the election in late May, said the NEC.

At the election, Thanh got 198,392 "yes" votes to become NA deputy, or some 75.28 percent of valid votes, becoming the elected NA deputy with highest votes in Hau Giang.

Prior to 2013, Thanh used to work as General Director and then Chairman of the Managing Board of PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVC). In 2013, Thanh was appointed to hold various posts in the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Thanh became vice chairman of Hau Giang people's committee in 2015.

In early June 2016, local media reported a private Lexus car worth over 5 billion Vietnamese dong (224,215 U.S. dollars), which was used by Thanh with a public service number plate.

Local media reports focused on three issues. Firstly, the car that picks Thanh up is a private car but holds public service number plate. Secondly, there has been a serious loss in PVC where Thanh worked as leader in 2007 and 2013. thirdly, despite such loss, Thanh was appointed to become vice chairman of Hau Giang people's committee.

On June 9, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong assigned nine organizations to examine and conclude on the media reports regarding Thanh.

In mid-June, Thanh proposed himself not to continue holding post of Hau Giang people's committee vice chairman in 2016-2021 term.

On Monday afternoon, the Central Inspection Committee issued a statement, saying that Thanh is not qualified to be promoted, appointed or planned for higher posts. The committee said Thanh was dishonest and irresponsible. Endit
