At least 5 killed in car bomb attack in Baghdad

Xinhua, July 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least five people were killed and some 20 others wounded on Tuesday in a car bomb explosion at a marketplace in northern the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said.

The attack occurred in the morning when a booby-trapped car detonated in the wholesale vegetable market in Husseiniyah neighborhood in northern Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the toll could rise as ambulances and police vehicles continue to evacuate the casualties to hospitals and medical centers.

The attack took place as Baghdad witnessed severe traffic jam as the security forces blocked most of the city's main streets and bridges on the Tigris River that bisects the Iraqi capital.

The source said the traffic congestion was temporary as military convoys were marching slowly in downtown Baghdad during the morning hours and attributed the situation to the preparations for military parade in Baghdad during the upcoming days.

A report by UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) estimated that 662 Iraqis were killed and 1,457 others wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in June across Iraq. Endit
